Tammisaari is an idyllic seaside town about two hours from Helsinki.  Its center is filled with period wooden townhouses. At its heart, JKMM is designing a museum for the Albert de la Chapelle Art Foundation. The building has been specifically conceived around de la Chappelle’s personal collection of 19th and 20th century Finnish art. This museum is an important landmark within the cultural quarter of Tammisaari and shows how art and architecture can inform the identity of a small town.

Pine and spruce are the traditional building materials of the region and will be used throughout the museum. The monolithic forms of the new timber architecture are contemporary and timeless. They are inspired by the pitched roof buildings in Tammisaari. The beacon-like window of the main exhibition space welcomes visitors by guiding them into the museum that breathes life into this historic conservation area.
